Split Markdown into RAG-Ready Chunks

Retrieval-augmented generation works best when source documents are broken into focused, self-contained chunks that fit an embedding model's context window. Long, unbroken Markdown files embed poorly and dilute retrieval quality. The Markdown Chunker turns a document into clean, meaningful segments in one click.

Chunk by Heading Level

Choose H1, H2 or H3 and the tool splits your document at every heading of that level or shallower. Each chunk keeps its heading text and all following content until the next boundary, preserving the natural structure of your notes, documentation and knowledge base.

Chunk by Character Count

When semantic structure is unavailable, split into fixed-size windows of N characters. The result is predictable, uniform chunks that map directly to token budgets.

Add Overlap to Preserve Context

Enable overlap so each new chunk begins a few characters before the previous one ends. This keeps sentences and ideas near the boundary intact, reducing information loss at retrieval time.

Copy or Download Every Chunk

Inspect each chunk individually with a one-click Copy button, or export the whole set as a single Markdown file where chunks are separated by HTML comments for easy tracking.

Private and Offline-Ready

Everything runs client-side. Your Markdown is processed using your browser's own JavaScript engine and never uploaded, making the tool safe for sensitive or confidential content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Markdown uploaded to a server?

No. The chunker runs entirely in your browser. Your Markdown never leaves your device.

How does heading-based chunking work?

It splits your document at your chosen heading level (H1, H2 or H3). Each chunk starts at a heading of that level or shallower and includes all following content until the next boundary of that level.

Why should I use overlap when splitting by character count?

Overlap preserves context across chunk boundaries, so sentences and ideas near a split are kept intact when the chunks are embedded separately.

Can I process very large Markdown files?

Yes, within your browser's memory limits. The tool handles typical documentation and knowledge-base files without issue.

Is the tool free to use?

Yes. The Markdown chunker is free and requires no registration or installation.
